OUR PROGRAMS

RESILIENT & PROSPEROUS COASTAL COMMUNITIES

Protecting the future well-being and health of our coastal communities can look very different depending on what the public values and what their livelihoods are built upon. Historically, the fisheries are what brought Indigenous people to western NL and is what keeps many people here today. For Gros Morne, the establishment of the National Park in the 1970’s to protect the terrestrial environment is what diversified the economy. Today, the tourism sector directly connected to the visitation of Gros Morne National Park is what allows this region and the 7 communities within it to continue to grow.

A Healthy Ocean

A healthy ocean directly supports the current and future prosperity of our in-shore fish harvesters, plant workers and local restaurants enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. We conduct a variety of research to better understand the health of marine habitats many commercially important fish stocks depend on in the coastal and marine environments surrounding Gros Morne. Check out what we’ve been up to in the sections linked below.

Thriving Coastal Communities

With an economy largely built not only on the fishery but also visitation to Gros Morne National Park, we have an inherent responsibility to ensure the park stays pristine which includes the communities and entire region visitors come to enjoy while exploring the park. To do this, we have established engaging and collaborative programs to help fish harvesters, tourism and hospitality operators, non-profits, municipalities, the national park, farms and the next generation to work towards more sustainable practices. This includes but is not limited to reducing their plastic waste and carbon footprint, composting, operating reuse-refill programs to become a more circular operation and choosing healthy fish stocks to serve at their local restaurants.
